Assisting the voluntary and community sector to develop its uses of information and communications technology (ICT)

ICT health-checks

An ICT health-check can be a very useful way of reviewing your organisation's use of ICT - and identifying changes that can benefit your organisation. For example, it can help you to answer key questions such as:

  • How well are we using ICT?
  • What technical options and solutions are there?
  • What should be our priorities?
  • When should we replace our computers?
  • Is the organisation's data safe?
  • How much should we spend?
  • Do we use our existing ICT effectively and productively?
  • Where can we get good value technical support?
  • How do we develop an ICT Strategy?
  • How can we work smarter?
  • How can we use ICT for collaboration with our partners?
The ICT Champions have developed an ICT Audit Toolkit that can help you to carry out your own ICT health-check (see below). Further, the Regional ICT Project is currently offering free ICT health-checks for third sector Infrastructure organisations (both in-depth reviews with an on-site visit, and specialist 'mini' health-checks).

ICT health-checks for infrastructure organisations

The Regional ICT Project is offering free ICT health-checks for third sector Infrastructure organisations in the East Midlands (fully funded by BIG Lottery fund). It is offering two levels of health-check:

1. An in-depth health-check

This will help you to assess how well your ICT is helping you achieve your organisation's goals and to identify potential changes or developments in your organisation's uses of iCT. The in-depth ICT health check includes:

  • A visit from experienced staff to discuss your organisation's work, your plans for future development and how ICT can help realise them.
  • A detailed review of your organisation's use of ICT - including equipment, ICT support arrangements, and staff ICT knowledge.
  • A concise report containing short, medium and longer term recommendations to support your ICT planning, strategy development and staff training programme.

2. Mini health-checks on specific issues

In addition to the in-depth reviews, the Project is also introducing 'mini' online health-checks on specific issues. The first two of these are:

ICT Audit Toolkit - from ICT Champions

The ICT Champions have developed a (free) toolkit for conducting your own ICT health-check for your organisation.

This comprises a set of three downloads for organisations, together with a 'how to' guide. It consists of a main document to record the overall objectives of your organisation and how it uses ICT, and two appendices which are tables to record details and ‘healthcheck’ your computers and to record and assess the ICT related training needs of staff and volunteers.

Please read the ‘how to’ document first and choose the most appropriate version for your system.
